A Community We Support: San Francisco

Background

The Feed the Hungry San Miguel kitchen in the community of San Francisco opened in 2008. During school year 2023-2024, meals are served to 52 students at the Rodríguez Flores primaria (elementary) every school day.

Location Statistics

The San Francisco community is 18 kilometers from central San Miguel de Allende. The most recent INEGI census (2020) reported a  population of 248 men, women, and children, residing in 56 households. Thirty-one percent of the residents were under the age of 14. Of the residents over 12 years old, 39% were economically active. The average level of schooling completed by adults was 6 years, and 6% were illiterate.

Nutrition Report School Year 2022-2023

For the latest Nutrition Report, staff nutritionists assessed 40 students in primaria through height, weight, and body fat measurements.

The cases of this population that present malnutrition are few, however, it is very likely that their diet does not provide the necessary nutrients. We detect clinical signs such as dry and depigmented skin and dry hair associated with a low intake of protein, omega 3 and 6 fatty acids, and vitamins and minerals. They also present dental caries that evidence the consumption of sugars. Follicular hyperkeratosis and fissured tongue are most likely related to the deficiency of other nutrients such as B complex vitamins. The consumption of processed foods with large amounts of sugar, trans fats, and salt is characteristic of this population.

A comparison of the anthropometric measurements carried out in the previous school year (2021-2022) showed a significant increase in normality cases from 47% to a 68%. Cases of mild malnutrition decreased from 9% to 3%.

Health Assessment Results
Condition Percentage of Students

At risk of overweight 6%
Normal 27%
Light underweight 3%
Moderate underweight 1%
Severe underweigh 0%

In addition to the low consumption of natural water, of concern is the lack of physical activity due to the prolonged use of electronic devices. The presence of dental cavities is not only due to frequent consumption of sugars, but also to a lack of hygiene.

We continue to offer informative workshops for parents on strategies to increase vegetable consumption through nutritious recipes prepared at home. Nutrition and exercise workshops are also offered to the children, and they are encouraged to drink more water and less sweetened juices and sodas.
