Back to School: A Return to Learning and a Break from Hunger

One of the greatest barriers to education is hunger. But if children have the sustenance to reach their potential in school, they are better equipped to build a stronger future for themselves, their families, and their communities.

We have seen just how hunger directly impacts the learning capacities of young children. It impairs their cognitive functions, emotional well-being, and overall academic performance. Chronic hunger can lead to long-term developmental delays that can affect their learning abilities into adulthood. Prospects become limited for securing employment or attending college, thereby extending the poverty cycle. Yet one healthy meal a day can help break the cycle, which could otherwise endure for generations. Educated children lift up entire communities as they go on to succeed in life.

Together, we can help fuel their futures through access to the nourishment they need, helping them learn without the stress and distraction of hunger. Support during these formative years will benefit them as they continue their education in secondary school.

We are expecting to welcome approximately 4,700 kinder and elementary students across 38 schools in the San Miguel de Allende municipality when classes resume in August. The goal of our Back-to-School Fundraising Campaign is to continue to provide more than 5,000 nutritious meals to these children throughout the 2024-2025 school year. For many, this is the best meal they will have that day.

You have the power to make a difference!

Your donation will not only fill their bellies but also nurture their dreams. Your support of Feed the Hungry San Miguel’s school meals program allows us to help provide a head start for thousands of needy children. Just US$30 sponsors one child’s school meals for two months. For US$150, you can sponsor one child’s school meals for the entire school year! Imagine the impact your contribution can have on a child’s life.

Our program goes beyond just providing meals. Through nutrition education workshops, we teach children and their mothers about making healthy food choices that make sustainable changes in their lives.

When school resumes at the end of August, we look forward to seeing the smiles of the children as they reach for their meal trays each day. We hope you will help us continue to provide sustenance for thousands of malnourished children who deserve a better chance at a brighter future.

We also need volunteer drivers to deliver food to the school kitchens on Tuesday mornings. Ready for an adventure? Email volunteer@feedthehungrysma.org!
