Award For Best Nutritional Status: Ignacio Lopez Rayon Elementary School in La Campana

On World Food Day, October 16, 2024, Feed the Hungry San Miguel celebrated a significant milestone by recognizing, for the first time ever, the school with the best nutritional status. After thorough analysis by our nutrition team, in collaboration with dedicated volunteer mothers and school directors who encourage children to enjoy meals at our kitchens, we evaluated all 38 participating schools to determine the Winner of the Best Nutrition Status for the 2023-2024 school cycle. Children’s measurements (weight and height, to determine BMI) were taken at the beginning and end of the year to assess their growth and nutritional progress.

“The right to food means that it must be adequate, available, and accessible to everyone. Here at La Campana, this responsibility involves teachers, principals, supervisors, and most importantly, the CHILDREN, along with our team of cooks.
For their collective efforts and collaboration, La Campana has been awarded the Best Nutrition Status this year,” stated Nutritionist Ana Uvalde during her introductory speech at the event. A special award was presented to School Principal Maria del Carmen Rosas Rendon for her significant influence on improving her students’ eating habits during the school cycles of 2022- 2023 and 2023-2024. This recognition was bestowed on World Food Day, October 16, 2024.

The celebration was filled with engaging activities, including an “Iron Chef”-style competition that involved all school grades. Additionally, the mothers participating in the Early Childhood Nutrition Program showcased their wholesome dishes and were acknowledged for their creativity in utilizing vegetables, as well as their skills in taste and presentation.

The award presentation was graced by Maestro Gabriel Mendoza Grimaldi., school supervisor representing the Secretariat of Public Education, who has over 20 years of experience; Jennifer Venkatraman, President of Feed the Hungry A.C.; Maestra Olivia Muñiz, Director of Operations of Feed the Hungry A.C.; and Maestra Miriam Sierra Cuevas, the school’s new principal.

“It is such an inspiration and motivation not only for me, but also for my colleagues, to receive this type of recognition. Support from organizations like yours motivates us to understand the importance of our work in the community. While there is much need that may seem impossible to address, I believe that through concrete actions, we can achieve significant improvements in our schools. I have observed a remarkable difference in the schools receiving daily meals from Feed the Hungry, particularly in academic performance and student participation. Improved nutrition directly correlates with better learning outcomes and information retention,” noted Maestro Mendoza Grimaldi.

Feed the Hungry would also like to extend our gratitude to Peter Bramley, the assigned weekly driver for La Campana, who was unable to attend but was greatly missed.
